How I Would Introduce Myself Professionally
My name is Gabrielle Hagans, and I am a Cybersecurity major at Old Dominion University. I expect to graduate in December 2026 and am working toward a career where I can help organizations protect their systems, networks, and sensitive information from cyber threats. My academic experiences have given me a strong foundation in cybersecurity principles, network security, digital forensics, and ethical hacking. Throughout my coursework, I have developed an appreciation for the constantly changing nature of cybersecurity and the importance of staying current with new technologies and emerging threats.
I am especially interested in defensive cybersecurity because I enjoy solving problems, analyzing security risks, and finding ways to strengthen an organization’s security posture before an attack occurs. I enjoy work that requires critical thinking, attention to detail, and continuous learning. As technology continues to evolve, I want to be part of a profession that helps individuals and organizations stay safe in an increasingly digital world. My goal is to continue building both my technical knowledge and professional skills while preparing for a successful career in cybersecurity.
Key Experiences That Shaped My Path
Several experiences during my time at Old Dominion University have helped shape my academic interests and career goals. One of the most significant has been completing hands-on cybersecurity projects throughout my courses. These assignments have allowed me to apply what I learned in the classroom to realistic situations involving network security, vulnerability assessments, intrusion detection, and cyber defense. Working on these projects helped me understand how cybersecurity concepts are applied in real-world environments and strengthened my confidence in solving technical problems.
Another important experience has been participating in Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions and other practical cybersecurity exercises. These activities challenged me to think critically under pressure while working through security-related problems. They required persistence, teamwork, and creativity to identify vulnerabilities and develop solutions. Participating in these exercises reinforced my interest in cybersecurity because I enjoyed the challenge of investigating problems and finding ways to improve security.
In addition to technical coursework, I have also developed stronger communication and research skills through writing-intensive assignments. Several of my classes required me to research cybersecurity topics, analyze current security issues, and explain technical concepts in a way that non-technical audiences could understand. These experiences taught me that effective communication is just as important as technical ability. Cybersecurity professionals must be able to explain risks, recommend solutions, and work with people from different backgrounds to improve an organization’s overall security.
What I Learned A long The Way
Looking back on these experiences, I have learned that success in cybersecurity depends on much more than technical knowledge alone. While understanding networks, operating systems, and security tools is essential, I have also learned the importance of communication, teamwork, adaptability, and continuous learning. Cybersecurity is constantly changing as new technologies emerge and attackers develop new techniques. Because of this, professionals must always be willing to learn and improve their skills.
My coursework has also taught me how to approach problems methodically instead of rushing to find solutions. Whether troubleshooting a network issue, analyzing security logs, or researching a cybersecurity incident, I have learned to gather information carefully, evaluate different possibilities, and make decisions based on evidence. This problem-solving approach has helped me become more confident when facing unfamiliar challenges.
Another valuable lesson has been learning how to manage multiple responsibilities while meeting deadlines. Completing technical labs, research papers, presentations, and team projects has improved my time management and organizational skills. These experiences have prepared me for professional environments where balancing multiple tasks and working under deadlines are common expectations.
Perhaps the biggest lesson I have learned is that growth comes through persistence. Not every project has been easy, and there have been times when I needed to spend extra time researching concepts or troubleshooting technical issues before finding the correct solution. Those challenges strengthened my confidence and reminded me that learning is an ongoing process. Every obstacle became an opportunity to improve my skills and gain a deeper understanding of cybersecurity.
Where I Am Headed
As I continue my education and prepare for graduation, I look forward to beginning my professional career in cybersecurity. I hope to work in a role focused on defensive security, where I can help organizations identify vulnerabilities, monitor for threats, respond to security incidents, and improve their overall security posture. I enjoy the investigative side of cybersecurity and appreciate the opportunity to solve complex problems while helping protect valuable information.
I also plan to continue earning industry certifications and expanding my technical skills after graduation. Technology changes quickly, and I believe lifelong learning is essential for success in cybersecurity. I want to stay current with new security tools, industry best practices, and emerging threats so I can continue growing throughout my career.
My long-term goal is to become a trusted cybersecurity professional who combines strong technical abilities with effective communication and leadership skills. I want to contribute to organizations that value innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement while helping create safer digital environments for employees, customers, and communities. This ePortfolio represents an important step in that journey because it allows me to showcase my academic work, technical projects, and professional growth. I hope it demonstrates not only what I have learned during my time at Old Dominion University but also my commitment to continuing my development as a cybersecurity professional. I am excited about the opportunities ahead and look forward to applying my knowledge, expanding my experience, and making meaningful contributions to the cybersecurity field.
