Reflection

Introduction

As a Cybersecurity student at Old Dominion University, I have developed skills that have helped me grow both academically and professionally. My coursework has given me opportunities to work with programming, cybersecurity concepts, data analysis, and technical problem-solving. My professional experience has also helped me develop communication and professional writing skills. The three skills I chose to highlight in my ePortfolio are Python Programming, Communication & Professional Writing, and Problem-Solving. I chose these skills because they are important in cybersecurity and can help me become a well-rounded professional. Cybersecurity professionals need to understand technology, communicate information clearly, and be able to analyze problems and find effective solutions.

Skill 1: Python Programming

Python programming is an important technical skill because it can be used to automate tasks, analyze data, and develop cybersecurity solutions. Throughout my coursework, I have had opportunities to use Python for projects involving cybersecurity and machine learning. These projects helped me become more comfortable writing code and understanding how programming can be applied to real-world problems.

One artifact that demonstrates this skill is my Spam Detection Project. In this project, I used Python to work with a dataset of messages and developed machine-learning models to determine whether messages were spam or legitimate. I worked with the data and used models such as Logistic Regression and Naive Bayes to classify the messages. This project helped me understand how Python can be used with machine learning to solve a cybersecurity-related problem.

Another artifact is my Malware Detection Project. For this project, I used Python to work with a malware dataset and prepare the data for analysis. I also used feature selection and PCA before applying machine-learning algorithms to classify files. This project required me to work through different steps of the process and understand how the data affected the results.

My third artifact is my Hacker Simulator. I used Python to create and test the program while working through errors and making changes to improve its functionality. This project gave me experience writing a more hands-on program and troubleshooting my code. Together, these three artifacts demonstrate that I can use Python for programming, data analysis, and cybersecurity-related problems. In a professional setting, these skills could help me automate tasks, analyze security information, and develop technical solutions.

Skill 2: Communication & Professional Writting

Communication and professional writing are important because cybersecurity professionals must be able to explain technical information to different audiences. Having technical knowledge is valuable, but it is also important to communicate that knowledge clearly. Throughout my academic and professional experiences, I have developed my ability to organize information, write professionally, and communicate with different audiences.

One artifact that demonstrates this skill is my Finding Your Purpose After 50 website, which I created using Wix for a Digital Design Project. I designed the website, wrote original blog posts, created resource pages, and developed content for adults over 50 who may be experiencing different life transitions. This project required me to think about my audience and communicate information in a clear and engaging way.

My second artifact is my professional resume. I organized my education, professional experience, skills, and accomplishments into a format that clearly presents my qualifications to potential employers. Creating my resume helped me understand how important it is to communicate professional information in a concise and organized way.

My third artifact is my Ethical Implications of the AID-TDR Cybersecurity Policy paper. In this paper, I researched the ethical concerns surrounding AI-driven cybersecurity, including privacy, algorithmic bias, accountability, transparency, and human oversight. I used scholarly sources to support my ideas and explained a complex cybersecurity topic through professional writing. These artifacts demonstrate that I can communicate with different audiences and explain information clearly. In a cybersecurity career, this skill can help me write reports, explain security risks, communicate with coworkers, and present technical information to people who may not have a technical background.

Skill 3: Problem-Solving

Problem-solving is another important skill in cybersecurity because security professionals are constantly faced with new threats and technical challenges. Effective problem-solving requires being able to understand an issue, analyze information, consider different solutions, and determine the best approach. My coursework has given me several opportunities to develop this skill through research and technical projects.

One artifact that demonstrates my problem-solving ability is my Zeek Intrusion Detection Research Paper. In this paper, I examined whether Zeek-based network intrusion detection could be used while protecting student privacy rights. I had to consider both the cybersecurity benefits of network monitoring and the potential privacy concerns. This required me to research different perspectives and develop a conclusion based on evidence.

My second artifact is my Gradient Boosting IDS Project. In this project, I worked with an intrusion-detection dataset and used Python and Scikit-learn to develop a Gradient Boosting model. I also worked with hyperparameter tuning to improve the model’s performance. This project required me to analyze the data, test different approaches, and evaluate the results.

My third artifact is my K-Means/DBSCAN Anomaly Detection Project. I used clustering techniques to analyze data and identify unusual patterns. I worked with both K-Means and DBSCAN and compared the approaches to better understand how they could be used for anomaly detection. These projects demonstrate my ability to break down complex problems, analyze information, and use different approaches to develop solutions. In a professional cybersecurity environment, problem-solving would help me investigate security issues, analyze threats, and determine effective ways to protect systems and information.

Describing My Skills to an Employer or Supervisor

If I were describing my skills to an employer, I would explain that I bring a combination of technical knowledge, communication, and problem-solving abilities. My Python programming experience has allowed me to work with data, machine learning, and cybersecurity projects. My communication and professional writing skills allow me to explain information clearly and create content for different audiences. Finally, my problem-solving skills have developed through projects where I had to analyze information, troubleshoot issues, and determine appropriate solutions. Together, these skills have helped prepare me for a career where I can combine technical knowledge with strong communication and analytical abilities.

Strongest Skill Reflection

Of the three skills I selected, I believe Problem-Solving is my strongest skill. I have developed this skill throughout my degree because many of my cybersecurity assignments required me to work through challenges instead of simply following a set of instructions. My Zeek research paper, Gradient Boosting IDS project, and K-Means/DBSCAN project all required me to analyze problems and make decisions based on the information available.

The Gradient Boosting IDS project contributed significantly to my growth because I had to work with data, develop a model, evaluate the results, and make adjustments to improve the approach. This experience taught me that solving a problem does not always mean finding an immediate answer. Sometimes it requires testing different approaches and learning from the results. I hope to continue using this skill in my cybersecurity career when investigating threats, troubleshooting technical issues, and developing solutions to security problems.

Applying My Skills Going Forward

After graduation, I plan to continue developing all three of these skills through additional cybersecurity experience, professional development, and continued learning. I especially want to strengthen my technical skills by gaining more hands-on experience with cybersecurity tools, programming, and emerging technologies. I also want to continue improving my communication skills because cybersecurity professionals need to work with both technical and nontechnical people. Most importantly, I want to continue challenging myself with new problems and learning from each experience. My goal is to use the skills I have developed throughout my degree as a foundation for continued professional growth and a successful career in cybersecurity.
